Exhibition Simona Deflorin
Simona Deforin is “di passaggio” in the lakeside gallery. Her work is mostly about portraits of people, about the inside. Expressed via the exterior, it aims at the interior with its breaks, imprints and uniqueness. In this inner state everyone is alone. The exhibition title „di passaggio“, in English „in transit“, evokes the artist’s melancholy mood. With her works she wants to reflect that we are all passing through, that we have only a short limited time at our disposal and therefore everything is only borrowed. The uniqueness of their first encounters also appeals to them. That everyone carries his extraordinary inside. Her work should open and support the viewer for special encounters. Born in Italy, Simona Deflorin brings the melancholy and fire of the South into her work and pushes the inside out. Powerful pictures, sometimes delicate, sometimes strong colours. Fragile and self-confident with a very own visual language.
Simona Deflorin was born in 1965 in Bergamo, Italy. Growing up in Switzerland, she attended the Basel School of Design from 1985 to 1988 and was a student of the Swiss avant-garde artist Franz Fedier in the class for free visual design. After the studio competition „Carl Spitteler“ she worked from July to December 1997 at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. This time becomes the key experience for her further work. Groups of works such as „Fragments“, „Fadistas“ and „Dear Visitors“ were then created. In 2012 she will be honored with the Fontana Gränacher Prize. The series of works „Ahnengalerie“ originates from this time. The book „Zwölf Sturzglasgeschichten“, consisting of twelve portraits with own short texts, accompanies the work. Furthermore, watercolour series such as „With Pleasure“, „Sarah meets Kali“ and „Kali and the Cat“ form an important part of her artistic exploration. Simona Deflorin lives and works in Basel.
Works by Simona Deflorin are represented in private collections as well as in the Sammlung Kunstkredit BL, Switzerland, and the Museum im Kleihues-Bau, Germany. Individual and group exhibitions in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Japan.
